Zero Turn vs Stand-On Mower — Which One Is Right for You?
Both zero turn and stand-on mowers are popular with commercial operators and serious homeowners. Here's how to choose based on your property and use case.
This is one of the questions we get most often at Dykes Motors. Both zero turn and stand-on mowers are excellent machines — the right choice depends on your property, how many hours you put on the machine, and personal preference.
Zero Turn Mowers: The Basics
Zero turn mowers are rider mowers with individual wheel motors that allow each rear wheel to spin independently — meaning the machine can turn on a dime with near-zero radius. They're fast, comfortable for long mowing sessions, and available in a wide range of sizes.
Best for:
- Properties 2+ acres
- Operators who mow 2+ hours per session
- Terrain with wide-open areas and fewer tight obstacles
- Operators who want maximum comfort over long days

Stand-On Mowers: The Basics
Stand-on mowers put the operator in a standing position on a platform at the rear of the machine. They're more compact, faster to load/unload, and easier to jump off in an emergency. They're the machine of choice for commercial lawn crews.

- Properties with lots of obstacles, trees, and tight areas
- Commercial operators running multiple properties per day
- Operators who load and unload frequently
- Smaller trailers — stand-ons take up significantly less space
